Maui in April: My Honest Take + Real Climate Data

Here’s how Maui’s five main activities stack up in April, scored against 5 years of historical weather at the spots where each one actually happens.

April is whale season's last call. My sighting estimate slips to about 55% as the humpbacks start their run back to Alaska — present early in the month, mostly gone by the end. In exchange, the beaches get better and drier: an 82% GO over five years, with leeward rain down to 1.8mm a day and only 7% of days genuinely wet.

If you can travel early in April, you might still catch the tail of the whales and bank stronger beach weather than midwinter offered — a genuine shoulder-season sweet spot, often with thinner crowds than March's spring break and softer prices. The helicopter, though, is firmly off the table. Here's the read.

The short answer

What’s the weather like in Maui in April?

Drier and firmer than winter — spring is settling in. Leeward south highs averaged about 80°F (26.6°C) and lows 69°F (20.3°C) over five years, with rain down to 1.8mm a day and only about 7% of days genuinely wet. Beaches stayed breezy near 16.1 km/h, while the trades over Kahului strengthened to around 28 km/h. April is the start of the dry-season run, noticeably drier than March.

Can you see whales in Maui in April?

Maybe — but only if you go early. My April whale estimate is about 55%, and it's a moving target within the month: the first half still gives you a real chance, while the last week is a coin-flip at best as the humpbacks finish leaving for Alaska. Boats stayed an excellent 92% GO throughout, so the water and conditions are fine — it's the whales' own calendar, not the weather, that's the limiter here.

If whales are a must, front-load the trip to the first two weeks. If they're a bonus rather than the point, the whole month is a strong beach-and-boat play regardless.

What's the best thing to do in Maui in April?

Boats were the headline at 92% GO, with the April 7–13 window averaging a perfect 7 out of 7 across five years. Beaches followed at 82%, best April 17–23. Hiking was the quiet star — 85% GO, and the April 6–12 window also hit a flawless 7/7.

Snorkeling came in at 75% GO, a touch lower than the beach number; lingering spring swell trims a few days, and the best stretch (April 11–17) averaged closer to 5.6 good days out of 7. Stick to protected south spots and check the morning.

The helicopter is the flat no: a 25% SKIP, the deepest yet, with the best window landing just 1 of 5 years. April trade winds over Kahului averaged 28.1 km/h. This is not the month to promise yourself a flight.

When should I go if I've only got a few days?

Go early. The hike (April 6–12) and boat (April 7–13) windows both peak in the first half and both averaged a perfect 7/7, and early April is also your best remaining whale shot — so the opening two weeks are the strong play. The beach window comes a little later (April 17–23) but the leeward sun is reliable all month. Leave the helicopter off the plan.

Is April a good time to visit Maui?

Yes — especially the first half. April is the bridge between whale season and beach season, and if you time it early you can stand on both: fading whales, firming sun, fewer people. Late April loses the whales but keeps the excellent beaches and the near-perfect boat conditions. The only flat no is the helicopter.

For a balanced, lower-stress trip, I think April is underrated. If your dates can flex, weigh it against March (more whales, more crowds) and May (no whales, but the beaches go from great to outstanding). The data under each call is yours to read before you trust mine.
