Maui in March: My Honest Take + Real Climate Data

Here’s how Maui’s five main activities stack up in March, scored against 5 years of historical weather at the spots where each one actually happens.

March is the closest Maui gets to having it both ways. The humpbacks are still here in force — my estimate sits around 78% — and the beach weather steps up a gear into spring. Leeward beaches hit an 80% GO over the last five years, snorkeling 76%, and whale-watch boats held at 88%. If you want whales and dependable sun on the same trip, March is the overlap.

Two cautions. The helicopter call tips into SKIP this month as the trade winds build, and March is spring-break season, so you won't have the place to yourself. But for the combination of late-season whales and warming, drying beaches, it's one of the most well-rounded months on the calendar. Here's the breakdown, numbers attached.

South Maui highs averaged about 79°F (26.2°C) and lows 68°F (19.9°C) over the last five years, with 3.1mm of rain a day and roughly 12% of days genuinely wet. Beaches stayed comfortable around 16.2 km/h, and the trade winds over Kahului built to about 27 km/h. March sits at the tail of the wetter winter half — drier than midwinter, not yet summer-dry.

Can you see whales in Maui in March?

Yes — March is the tail of peak whale season, so the odds are still strong. My sighting estimate is about 78%, and the humpbacks begin slipping back toward Alaska through late March into April. The shore counts reflect the wind-down — tallies of 313, 367 and 307 in recent years, lower than February's frenzy but still plenty active. Boats out of Māʻalaea stayed an 88% GO, so the water itself is in fine shape.

Read it as the smart compromise: if catching whales matters and you also want better beach odds than midwinter, March trades a little whale density for a lot more reliable sun. By late April they're essentially gone, so this is close to your last clean shot at both in one trip.

What's the best thing to do in Maui in March?

Beaches were an 80% GO, best in the March 23–29 window (about 6.6 good days out of 7). Snorkeling came in at 76%, window March 22–28. Hiking held its steady 84%, best March 21–27. And boats were the standout at 88% GO — the March 25–31 window averaged a perfect 7 out of 7 across all five years.

The helicopter is where March turns honest. It dropped to a 38% SKIP. The trade winds that define Maui's spring and summer pick up over Kahului, averaging 27 km/h, and cloudy, bumpy air is no way to spend helicopter money. I wouldn't build a trip around a flight in March; if you're set on one, the only window with any reliability was March 15–21, and even that landed just 3 of 5 years.

When should I go if I've only got a few days?

Lean into the back half of the month. The beach (March 23–29) and boat (March 25–31) windows both peak late, and the boat window averaged a flawless 7/7 — so book the whale trip for then, before the humpbacks thin out, and bank beach days around it. The upcountry hike is steadiest March 21–27. Skip the helicopter, or hold it as a flexible maybe.

Is March a good time to visit Maui?

Yes — it's one of my favorite all-rounders. You get the back end of whale season and the front end of reliable beach weather in the same week, which almost no other month offers. The catch is crowds, since it's spring break, and a helicopter that's no longer worth banking on. If neither of those dictates your trip, March is an easy recommend.

If your dates can move, compare March against February — denser whales, slightly cooler beaches — and April, which trades the last whales for firmer sun. Whichever you pick, read the numbers under each call before you trust my verdict.
