Maui Snorkel Season: The Best Months for Clear, Calm Water

Here’s the honest answer: you can snorkel Maui any month of the year. On the leeward South coast (Mākena, Wailea — where the reefs and the calm water are), every month clears my bar at least 65% of the time. So this isn’t really a “which month” question — it’s about picking calm, clear water over wind and rain runoff, and summer just gives you the best odds of that.

Share of days with calm, clear, warm water — 5 years of history. Every bar is high: summer (Junetops it) edges out winter, but nothing’s a write-off.

When to go, honestly

Summer · May–Oct

Your safest bet. Light winds and almost no rain on the South coast, so the water's calmest and clearest. This is when I'd book if I had the choice.

Winter · Nov–Apr

Still very doable — the reefs don't go anywhere. Just watch the wind: a passing front can churn things up for a day or two, so stay flexible and go on the calm mornings.
