Here’s how Maui’s five main activities stack up in May, scored against 5 years of historical weather at the spots where each one actually happens.

May is the month I'd point a value-minded traveler to first. Beaches hit a 90% GO over the last five years, boats were a near-perfect 98%, and you get all of it before the summer crowds and peak prices arrive. The whales are essentially gone (my estimate is down to about 15%), so this is a sun-and-water trip, not a wildlife one.

It's the leading edge of Maui's dry season: warm, reliably sunny on the leeward coast, and quieter than June through August. The only washout is the helicopter, which the building trade winds push deep into SKIP. If your trip is about beaches, snorkeling, hiking and boat days, May is one of the strongest — and best-value — months on the calendar. Here's the read.

How crowded is Maui in May?

Still quiet — and that's the whole case for May. Here it is in one line: you get close to summer's weather without summer's prices or its packed beaches. Beaches were a 90% GO and boats a 98% GO — numbers that rival the June–August peak — but the island is still in its quieter spring rhythm. That gap, same sun and fewer people, is what makes May special to me.

Can you see whales in Maui in May?

Barely. The humpbacks have left for Alaska, so at about 15% this isn't a whale month. Come in May for the water and the calm, not the breaches.

What's the best thing to do in Maui in May?

Boats were nearly flawless at 98% GO, with the May 20–26 window averaging a perfect 7 out of 7 across all five years. Beaches matched the mood at 90%, best May 23–29. Snorkeling jumped to 86% as the summer water clears up, best May 20–26. Hiking held a strong 90%, window May 21–27.

The helicopter is still the lone no: 16%, a SKIP, with the best window landing only 2 of 5 years and the trades over Kahului averaging 30.1 km/h. If a flight is a priority, it belongs on a winter trip, not a May one.

When should I go if I've only got a few days?

Aim for the back half of the month — it's gold. The beach (May 23–29), snorkel (May 20–26), hike (May 21–27) and boat (May 20–26) windows all cluster late, and the boat window averaged a perfect 7/7. Stack your water days there and you'll be hard-pressed to catch a bad one. Leave the helicopter off the plan.

Is May a good time to visit Maui?

A strong yes, and the best value on the board. If you don't need whales, May gives you near-summer beach and water quality with a fraction of the high-season hassle. The only thing you give up is the helicopter, which winter does better. I'd happily book May sight-unseen for a beach trip.
