Maui in November: My Honest Take + Real Climate Data

Here’s how Maui’s five main activities stack up in November, scored against 5 years of historical weather at the spots where each one actually happens.

November is the turn of the season. The first humpbacks start trickling back into the channel — my estimate climbs to about 25%, the vanguard of the winter show — while the leeward beaches stay warm and mostly dry. Beaches were an 85% GO over the last five years and boats 91%, so summer's water conditions largely hold even as the calendar flips toward winter.

It's a transitional, quietly good month: still warm, not yet crowded, with the wetter winter pattern only beginning to creep in. The helicopter is improving but still a skip. If you want the leading edge of whale season with summer's leftovers, November is the bridge. Here's the read.

The short answer

What’s the weather like in Maui in November?

Warm and mostly dry, with the wetter winter pattern only just beginning. Leeward south highs averaged about 82°F (27.6°C) and lows 70°F (21.3°C) over the last five years, with 1.3mm of rain a day and about 6% of days genuinely wet. Beaches stayed pleasant around 15.8 km/h, and the trades over Kahului were moderate near 27 km/h. It's a transitional month — still summery on the leeward coast, with the first hints of winter cloud.

Can you see whales in Maui in November?

Sometimes — November is when the channel starts to wake up. The earliest humpbacks arrive from Alaska, and my sighting estimate of about 25% reflects a real but uneven chance — a strong year can already deliver, a quiet one makes you wait for December. Boats were a 91% GO, so if you do head out, conditions are on your side; the variable is the whales themselves, not the water.

Expect the numbers to build fast from here: December roughly doubles the odds, and January through March is the peak. November is the opening note, not the crescendo.

What's the best thing to do in Maui in November?

The first week of November was the standout across the board. Beaches were an 85% GO, best November 2–8. Boats matched at 91%, same window. Snorkeling came in at 78%, also November 2–8. Hiking was an 87% GO, peaking just after on November 5–11.

The helicopter stayed a 31% SKIP. Like October, it's improving — the trades over Kahului are down to 26.8 km/h — but not there yet, with the best window landing only 2 of 5 years. Treat it as a flexible maybe rather than a firm booking; late November (the 22–28 window) was the steadier bet.

When should I go if I've only got a few days?

Front-load the trip. The beach, snorkel and boat windows all peak on November 2–8, with the hike just after on November 5–11, so the first week and a half is the sweet spot — before the wetter pattern deepens and before the late-month holiday run-up. Hold the helicopter loose.

Is November a good time to visit Maui?

Yes, and it's easy to overlook. November gives you summer-grade beaches and the first whales of the season before the holiday crowds and the heavier winter rain set in — a genuine shoulder month, warm and quieter than what's coming.

The one catch is that whales are a maybe, not a lock, this early. If you want them guaranteed, look to December's build or the January–March peak; if you want warm beaches with a whale bonus and fewer people, November is the pick. Read the numbers under each call before you trust the verdict.
