Maui in August: My Honest Take + Real Climate Data

Here’s how Maui’s five main activities stack up in August, scored against 5 years of historical weather at the spots where each one actually happens.

August is the hottest month on Maui, and the weather is still close to a lock. Beaches were an 88% GO over the last five years, boats 97%, and hiking 93% — the dry season holding firm right through late summer. If you're traveling on a school-holiday calendar, you'll get reliable sun; you'll also get peak heat and peak crowds.

Two honest notes set August apart from midsummer: the highs nudge just past the top of my comfort range, and it falls in the heart of Central Pacific hurricane season — rarely a problem for Maui, but the one tail risk worth a glance. The helicopter remains a near-certain skip. Here's the read.

The short answer

What’s the weather like in Maui in August?

The hottest month, and still dry on the leeward side. South-shore highs averaged about 85°F (29.2°C) and lows 72°F (22.2°C) over five years — the warmest of the year — with 1.3mm of rain a day and about 6% of days genuinely wet. Beaches stayed pleasant near 15.1 km/h, and the Kahului trades ran around 33 km/h. It's peak dry season, though it also falls in the heart of Central Pacific hurricane season — rarely a problem, but worth a glance.

Does Maui get hurricanes in August?

Rarely — but August is the one month worth a glance at the forecast. It sits in the busiest part of Central Pacific hurricane season, which peaks in late summer. A direct hit on Maui is genuinely rare, and the five-year averages stayed dry, but averages don't capture a once-in-a-while storm. It's the one month I'd check the tropical forecast before locking in non-refundable plans — alongside August's usual trade-offs of peak heat, peak crowds and peak prices.

Can you see whales in Maui in August?

No. The humpbacks won't be back until late fall, so August sits around 2%.

What's the best thing to do in Maui in August?

Beaches were an 88% GO, with the August 12–18 window a perfect 7 out of 7. Hiking came in at 93%, best August 8–14, also flawless. Boats held at 97%, window August 10–16, perfect again. Snorkeling rounded it out at 85%, also best on August 12–18.

The helicopter stayed a 14% SKIP — the trades over Kahului haven't backed off, averaging 32.8 km/h, and the best window landed 0 of 5 years. It's still not an August activity; hold it for winter.

When should I go if I've only got a few days?

Mid-August is the cluster: beach and snorkel windows on August 12–18, hiking on August 8–14, boats on August 10–16, several of them perfect 7/7. Book water for the cooler morning and late-afternoon hours given the heat, keep an eye on the tropical forecast, and leave the helicopter off the plan.

Is August a good time to visit Maui?

Yes for weather, with two asterisks. The sun is nearly guaranteed and four of five activities are near-locks, but it's the hottest month, one of the busiest, and the only stretch where I'd keep half an eye on the tropics.

If you can move your dates, September right after gives you almost identical weather with far fewer people and clearer water — the better-value twin. But if August is your window, the conditions won't be the thing that lets you down. Read the numbers under each call and decide for yourself.
